Donecept enhances the function of nerve cells in the brain by inhibiting the breakdown of a chemical known as acetylcholine. It is prescribed for confusion (dementia) associated with Alzheimer's disease. While it does not cure Alzheimer's, it may enhance memory, awareness, and overall function. This medication acts as an enzyme blocker, helping to restore the balance of natural substances (neurotransmitters) within the brain.
Before using Donecept, inform your doctor if you have any heart rhythm issues like "sick sinus syndrome" (slow heart rates), an enlarged prostate, urination difficulties, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or a seizure condition such as epilepsy.
If you are scheduled for surgery, notify the surgeon in advance that you are taking Donecept. This medication may cause side effects that could affect your thinking or reaction times, so exercise caution when driving or engaging in activities that require alertness. Donecept addresses dementia linked to Alzheimer's disease by preventing acetylcholine breakdown, which is crucial for memory and cognitive processes.
Donecept contains the active ingredient Donepezil Hydrochloride, an inhibitor of the enzyme acetylcholinesterase. This enzyme inhibition helps prevent the degradation of acetylcholine, essential for nerve signal transmission in the central nervous system. Donecept also slows the progression of dementia from Alzheimer's disease.
Take it orally before bedtime. The initial recommended dose is 5 mg once daily for one month, which may be increased to 10 mg per day. Do not swallow or chew the tablet; allow it to dissolve in your mouth, swallowing occasionally while it dissolves.
Inform your doctor if you have sick sinus syndrome, an enlarged prostate, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, urination issues, asthma, or stomach or duodenal ulcers, or if you have a seizure disorder like epilepsy. Also, let your doctor know if you are currently taking NSAIDs, other choline inhibitors, are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.
Donecept is not suitable for patients with hypersensitivity to Donepezil or piperidine derivatives.
Common side effects may include allergic reactions (hives, rash, facial swelling), headaches, dizziness, fatigue, coughing up blood or vomiting materials that resemble blood or coffee grounds, painful or difficult urination, and seizures (blackouts or convulsions).
